Along with developing cities, the Centre and state governments are now shifting their focus to building smart villages. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, for example, recently said her state would soon upgrade two villages to smart villages. In light of this, it would be interesting to look at property-holding figures of people residing in India's villages.

According to official estimates, 56 per cent of total rural households do not own land, while 35.73 per cent of these households are dependent on agriculture. Further, official figures indicate that slum-dwellers in urban areas enjoy better living standards than rural Indians. This shows that even though urban housing shortage is seen as a national concern, rural housing shortage is not less severe.
