According to the United Nations, discrimination against women is common in India's housing sector. However, ownership of property among women is gradually rising. For example, according to the first phase of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), 40 per cent of Indian women own property, either jointly or alone. In fact, Bihar, a state infamous for gender discrimination issues, tops the list of Indian states where women jointly own properties. On parameters of female financial empowerment, like women having a say in household decision-making process and owning mobile phones and savings accounts, Sikkim and Goa are on top.
