Whether a stay-at-home mom or a working professional leading a sedentary lifestyle, fitness is necessary for a healthy mind and body. However, our fast-paced lives make it difficult to hop to the gym even if it is a stone's throw from our homes. In such a scenario, building a home gymnasium proves a worthwhile option. A small room, basement, back patio or a convenient unused corner of your living room can make for a perfect space to set up a home gym. Add a good workout equipment and you are ready to go!

MakaanIQ presents a quick guide to help you to organise the fitness equipment and build a mini-fitness centre at home.

Ambience

Ensure the space you plan to convert into a home gym is airy and clutter-free. Allow natural light to enter the room through the windows or doors. Lamps with soft white bulbs or recessed fixture with tap lights will create the desired effect. Place indoor plants to enhance the aesthetic appeal and improve the oxygen level in the room.

Workout equipment

Install equipment, such as a treadmill, an adjustable bench with incline and decline functionality, a Pilates ball, a punching bag, an exercise mat and bicycle, and dumbbell sets. This equipment will help you improve your fitness.

Space for floor exercises

Utilise the rest of the floor area for other floor workouts, such as jumping jacks, push-ups, leg lifts, on-spot jogging, squats, crunches and dancing.

Accessorise the area

Racks with pull-up/chin bars, dip attachments, band pegs and even pulley systems are important features of a personal gymnasium. Augmenting the gym area with other paraphernalia, such as mirrors on the wall and a corner shelf unit, will make the room look visually larger.

Budget constraints prevent us from creating our own fitness zone at home. With so many financial responsibilities, it is hard to invest money in creating a well-equipped fitness place. Here are some tips that will help you create an effective fitness corner at home and that too on a budget of around Rs 20,000. Here are some must-haves:

For cardio section

You can always go for a cycling equipment instead of treadmill. A new electric treadmill will come within the range of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. If you wish to lower your costs, you can go for online sites and look for second-hand equipment. Alternatively, you can opt for a cycling equipment. You can buy a decent one within the range of Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000.

Tip: Usually, people think that cycling is not that effective. They need to have a treadmill for good results. However, this is not the case. Be free to make a convenient choice.

Here are some of the equipment you could have in your fitness area depending on the budget:

  • Stepper: A stepper is a good option for aerobic activities. Buy this within the range of Rs1,000 to Rs 2,000.
  • Jump rope: Invest around Rs 100 to get the most effective workout equipment. This is a great way to burn fat.
  • Weights: You can buy a set of dumbbells. This will require an investment of Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. With an increase in your strength, you can purchase dumbbells of higher weights.
  • Fitness ball and resistance band: Fitness ball and resistance band are a great way to strengthen the muscles. This will cost around Rs1,000.

Also, buy a yoga mat and utilise the benefits of this effective and economical form of exercise.
