Feng Shui is a popular Chinese philosophical system that emphasises the importance of orienting and decorating a house to attract a positive flow of energy. The literal translation of Feng Shui in English is wind-water. Having originated in China, Feng Shui decor and design concepts are fast catching up with people across the world.

MakaanIQ presents a few Feng Shui techniques which you can practise for harmonising your surroundings and inviting positivity and charm.

Front door

A building's entrance is very significant, as it defines the route for the energy flow. The space around the front door should be inspiring. Adorn the area with a fresh doormat, flower pots, bright lighting, etc. Remove any mirror that faces your front door, as this may deflect the energy. Placing a water element, such as a fountain near the entrance, will help bring prosperity.

Living room

Furnish your living room to ensure it is clean and uncluttered enough to make the entrance visible from the seating area. Place a sofa against the wall but leave a few inches of space. Never make a direct alignment with the entry door. Opt for a round or oval coffee table that lets the energy radiate all around. Placing a mirror in the interior of the house, particularly one that reflects the food on the dining table, is said to be lucky for the occupants. Having a crystal chandelier or a Buddha statue in the house conforms to Feng Shui principles.

Kitchen

The empty space above the kitchen cabinets accumulates dust and stagnant energy. Make some adjustments by placing some lighting, indoor plants or other décor objects that will help transform the energy.

Bedroom

Rearrange the bedroom for attaining a relaxed and calm atmosphere. Use a solid headboard, comfortable mattress and soothing colours for furnishings. The presence of a television, computer or exercise equipment tends to diminish the positive energy, or shift them to another room. Beds with built-in storage drawers beneath are not considered favourable in Feng Shui, as these block the circulation of energy.

Patio or balcony

Outdoors make us connect with nature. Enhance the outdoor space of your house with beautiful plants, comfortable furniture and the must-have part of Feng Shui — décor  the classic wind chimes, which are said to expel negative energies and fill the zone with positivity.

Staircase

Staircase can pose a serious challenge when redesigning home based on Feng Shui. It is said that you avoid a staircase right in front of your main door and also, avoid it in east, southwest and southeast directions. In case, the staircase is facing any of these directions, up the wooden element and lower the usage of metal element in designing of these.
