Pune, commonly known as the Oxford of the East, is a popular destination for Indian as well as foreign students. Every year, the city sees thousands of students coming here to join the various educational institutes it hosts and boasts. Since the demand is quite high, finding an affordable accommodation in Pune could be a challenge for a student new to the city. However, keeping the budget of students in mind, several landlords offer affordable housing options near the campuses.

MakaanIQ lists the top 10 established education-driven locations/belts offering affordable accommodation options in Pune.

 

FC Road/ Deccan Gymkhana/ Shivajinagar

One of the most prestigious and oldest student areas in the city, this belt developed into a popular hangout as well as a shopping hub. One thing to consider while renting a flat or a paying guest accommodation here, is that the area is quite expensive. High cost is no deterrent for students though as the area houses popular colleges such as Fergusson College, BMCC, Abasaheb Garware College and Gokhale Institutes.

In Shivaji Nagar for example, rental value of a 1BHK unit could start from Rs 10,000 per month. Higher configurations such as a 4BHK unit will cost Rs 1 lakh and a security deposit of up to Rs 3 lakh.

 

Law College Road/ Senapati Bapat Road/ Erandwana

Surrounded by lush greenery, this is one of the coolest student hubs with premium institutes such as the Film and Television Institute of India, Symbiosis College of Arts & Commerce, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management and Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication in its vicinity. Though the area is costly, it is easy to find a PG accommodation and flat, on a sharing basis.

In Senapati Bapat Road, rental prices start at Rs 15,000 for a 1BHK unit to about Rs 70,000-90,000 for a 3-5 BHK unit. Security deposits may go up to Rs 3 lakhs if an individual is taking up a big unit entirely.

 

Kothrud/ Paud Road/ Karve Road

Owing to its proximity to a number of reputed educational institutions such as the MIT College and the Maharashtra Institute of Technology and International Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD), this suburb is quite popular with students. Convenient location and connectivity make Kothrud one of the best locations in the city. Kothrud brings in some affordable options starting at Rs 5,000 per month for small units, to Rs 1.50 lakh for bigger units.

At Karve Road, you can find a 1BHK, 2BHK or 3BHK unit within Rs 30,000 per month. Note that some affordably priced units may mean a compromise in terms of conveniences.

 

Viman Nagar/ Kharadi/ Kalyani Nagar/Wadgaon Sheri

Swankiest among all, this belt continues to be one of the most-sought after locations for the crème-de-la-crème due to its advantageous location, easy accessibility to other areas of the city and good infrastructure. Known as the house of top IT companies, the area hosts many luxury housing projects. There is a huge demand for budget rented flats, PG accommodations as the area boasts of a number of educational institutions, including Christ College, International School of Business & Media (ISBM), Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID) and Dhole Patil College of Engineering.

Rental values in these areas start at Rs 10,000 per month and may go up to Rs 3 lakh, depending upon the exact location, infrastructure and amenities, etc.

 

Ganeshkhind/ Pune University Area

With its quiet surroundings, this area comprises one of the most prestigious alma mater, the Pune University, and other important colleges such as the Modern College. It has been the most popular student hotspots for over many decades. This area provides an array of student accommodations which varies from budget to luxurious apartments and PG accommodation.

Monthly rents vary between Rs 8,000 and Rs 50,000, depending on where exactly are you located and what amenities you are getting to enjoy.

 

Bavdhan/ Pashan Road

One of the emerging educational hubs in the city, this area hosts a large number of educational institutions such as the Indian Institute of Aeronautical Engineering & Information Technology, the Suryadutta Group of Management Studies, etc. Smooth connectivity makes the area a favourite among students as well as investors.

Monthly rents here may start at Rs 4,000 and could run up to Rs 60,000 per month. At Pashan, rental properties start at Rs 8,000 per month.

 

Singhgad Road/ Vadgaon Budruk

Located in the suburbs of Pune, this area has evolved as one of the important student areas in Pune due to important institutions such as the Sinhgad Institute of Management and the Sinhgad Institute of Engineering and Architecture. The great thing about this area is that this is one of the most affordable and student-friendly locations and yet quite well-connected to the other parts of the city. There are lots of budget housing accommodations in the area.

Rental values start at Rs 7,000 per month and may go up to Rs 30,000.

 

Pune-Satara Road/ Katraj/ Dhankawadi

One of the oldest student hubs, the area is famous for the Bharati Vidyapeeth College, where thousands of students get enrolled every year. The area provides budget-friendly student accommodation.

In these locations, you have plenty of options between Rs 5,000-15,000 per month.

 

Camp

The demand for renting properties and PG accommodation in this area is always high because of a number of reputed colleges such as the Poona College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Aranhas Rosary Jr. College and various others institutes in its vicinity. As the area falls in the heart of the city, students have a soft spot for this place. Its close proximity to big malls, shopping outlets, high-grade restaurants has made it one of the coolest student hangouts.

Owing to its popularity, the starting monthly rental value of properties is Rs 15,000.

 

Sadashiv Peth/ Tilak Roak/ Parvati

One of the major student hotspots, the area has a cluster of educational institutions and colleges such as SP College, Suryadutta College of Management and Mass Communication, Yashwantrao Chavan Law College, Shahu College and Tilak Maharashtra College. This area is quite a favourite among students because of its accessibility, lush surroundings and pocket-friendly accommodations.

Monthly rental values of properties here start at Rs 8,000.

 

Apart from these locations, Hinjewadi, Hadapsar, Aundh and Wakad on the outskirts of the city are fast emerging as the future hotspots. Villages in the periphery of Pune, such as the Lavale Valley, look promising as big institutions such as the Symbiosis International University and the Bharati Vidyapeeth have huge campuses coming up in the area.
